The hermitage is located on the southwest slope of the hill where the Doutor João Lopes Aleixo Neighborhood now stands, in the locality of Cabeção. From this position, one can see the plain stretching out before it, situated within the municipality of Mora.
The history of this site dates back to ancient times. It is believed that the hermitage was erected in the 14th century, on the grounds of a farm linked to the Order of Aviz, known by the names "Quinta de São Salvador" or "Salvador do Mundo" (Savior of the World). Excavations and archaeological finds on site suggest that, long before, this space was already inhabited, possibly the site of a Roman villa. There is even the hypothesis that an even older Paleo-Christian construction existed here. Throughout the centuries, the hermitage remained connected to the Military Order of Aviz.
Observing the hermitage, one notices a robust construction, which may suggest Romanesque influences. However, the architectural element that stands out the most is its Gothic-style portal. This portal has remained on site since its construction in the 14th century, enduring the passage of time and even the effects of the 1755 earthquake.
The interior of the hermitage features a simple layout. In the central nave, there is an iron cross, flanked by figures of Saint Joseph and Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus. In the chancel, the altar is covered with tiles depicting floral themes, probably dating from the 18th century, and is surmounted by the figure of Christ.
Currently, the Hermitage of São Salvador do Mundo serves as the chapel for Cabeção's public cemetery. This use lends the site an atmosphere of tranquility and an invitation to reflection, surrounded by the memory of generations who have passed through this land.
