It is located in Brotas, in the municipality of Mora, district of Évora, Portugal.
The origin of the sanctuary dates back to before 1424, with the construction of a small hermitage dedicated to Our Lady of Brotas.
It became an important pilgrimage site after a miracle involving a shepherd and his cow, dated approximately 1400.
It was initially a commandery of the Order of São Bento de Avis and became independent in 1535, promoting the expansion of the temple and the urban area around it.
Classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1956.
The church combines Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassical elements due to the various phases of construction between the 15th and 18th centuries.
The chancel is in the late Gothic style with a Neoclassical main altar.
The side chapels, the nave with barrel vault, the high choir and the sacristy are other notable elements.
The main facade includes a bell tower and an outdoor altar for open-air masses.
The interior of the church is extensively decorated with tiles from the 16th to 18th centuries.
Due to the increase in pilgrims, hostels were built, creating Rua da Igreja (Church Street).
These hostels were managed by brotherhoods from various locations, some still identified by tombstones.
Despite the decrease in the influx of faithful in the 19th and 20th centuries, devotion to Our Lady of Brotas remains alive.
The festivity in honor of Our Lady of Brotas takes place annually on the second weekend of August.
A shepherd saw the Virgin Mary appear to him, telling him to build a temple after the supposed miracle of the cow's resurrection.
The small ivory image of Our Lady of Brotas is associated with this legend.
Devotion to Our Lady of Brotas has extended beyond Portugal, with locations and archdioceses in India and Brazil dedicated to her.
