Located in Monsaraz, in the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz, the Atalaia de São Gens stands on an elevated and isolated point in the landscape. It is situated at the top of a hillock, offering a wide view over the surrounding territory.
Its dominant position allows for contemplation of the vastness of the Alentejo plain and, in particular, the meandering line of the Guadiana River, which defines part of the Portuguese border.
Erected in 1646, the Atalaia de São Gens was part of the vast border defense system, crucial during the Portuguese Restoration War. Its function was to monitor the river accesses of the Guadiana River and strengthen the protective line of the Reguengos de Monsaraz fortress.
Its strategic design was conceived by military engineers Nicolau de Langres and Jean Gilot, responsible for part of the military architecture of the era. Due to its historical importance, this monument is classified as a Public Interest Property.
With a square and symmetrical plan, the watchtower features solid facades, without any openings for doors or windows. Built from dry shale masonry, its form is simple and robust, common characteristics of defensive military constructions of the period.
Although the original roof, believed to have been vaulted, collapsed in the early 20th century, the structure maintains its imposing presence. Some studies suggest that the watchtower's site may have older roots, perhaps dating back to Roman or Arab fortifications, however, the visible structure is from the 17th century.
The primary function of a watchtower was observation, and the Atalaia de São Gens fulfills this premise. From its elevated point, the gaze sweeps across a stunning landscape, dominated by nature and the tranquility of the Alentejo.
Visiting this site offers the opportunity to appreciate the expanse of the landscape that was once watched over, imagining the strategic role this tower played in protecting the territory throughout the centuries.
