The Tapestry Maker's Monument is located in the town of Arraiolos, integrated into a public space accessible to all visitors.
Its location in the town underscores the importance of this traditional craft for Arraiolos' identity and daily life, being situated in a way that it can be easily appreciated by those strolling through the locality.
This monument pays tribute to the women who, over generations, dedicated their lives to the art of embroidering Arraiolos carpets.
It is a recognition of their mastery and patience, preserving an artisanal tradition deeply rooted in the town's history, with documentary references dating back to the 16th century. The tapestry makers were fundamental in preserving the patterns and techniques that made these carpets famous, weaving not only threads but also the cultural identity of Arraiolos.
Authored by the artist Armando Alves and inaugurated in 2001, the monument is a piece that dialogues with the art it celebrates.
It includes a mosaic that suggests the form and color of an Arraiolos carpet and a ceramic panel depicting the work of the embroiderers. On the back, a bas-relief represents the hills surrounding the town, crowned by its distinctive castle. A small water feature at the base adds a touch of serenity to the work.
