The Fonte da Pedra is located slightly away from the center of Arraiolos village, in an area with a rural character.

It is prominently situated by the road, about 500 meters from the most built-up area of the village, standing out in the rural surroundings.

Characteristic Features

This hydraulic monument features a large structure and a striking design. It consists of a central body flanked by three semicircular arches. At the top, a royal crest stands out, indicating the date of 1827.

The fountain possesses distinct decorative elements, such as volutes and ornate finishes, which include details in blue and white scagliola. There are two water spouts with their own bases and a curved basin, formerly intended to serve as a drinking trough for animals. The surrounding pavement is made of regular cobblestones, complementing the ensemble.

History and Traditional Function

Built in 1827, the Fonte da Pedra historically served as an important water supply point. Its alternative name, Fonte dos Almocreves, suggests its relevance to travelers and transporters who, in earlier times, traversed these routes with their pack animals.

In addition to its function as a public fountain for people and animals, the structure incorporates a public washhouse at its rear. This space, with its octagonal tank and roof, bears witness to the daily washing practices that took place there, adding another layer to the history of the fountain's use and service to the local community.
