Pillory of Alandroal

Category: Civil Architecture > Pillory

District: Évora > Alandroal > Alandroal > Centro Histórico

Location

The Pillory of Alandroal stands in the Largo da República, the main square that forms the heart of the town's Historic Centre. Its central location, surrounded by buildings with traditional Alentejo architecture, invites a pause to observe the tranquility of the place and the harmony of the urban ensemble.

A Historical Symbol

Dating from the 16th century, the Pillory of Alandroal is a testament to the municipal autonomy that the town gained over the centuries. These monuments were erected after the granting of a royal charter, as was the case for Alandroal under the reign of D. João II in 1486, and later with D. Manuel I in 1514. Its presence in the centre of the town symbolized the judicial and administrative authority of the municipality, marking the place where local justice was publicly exercised.

Stone Details

The structure of the Pillory reveals characteristics of 16th-century architecture. Although it does not have its original finial, its pyramidal-truncated base and a square-sectioned shaft can be observed. The highlight is the hexagonal capital, which features twisted decoration and a heart-shaped element, details that suggest a strong influence of the Manueline style. Its design uses marble stonework for the capital, and granite for the base and shaft. These materials, typical of the region, give the piece a robust and authentic appearance. Its aesthetic bears similarities to other Alentejo pillories of the era.

Legacy and Preservation

Throughout its history, the Pillory of Alandroal faced periods of dismantling, such as the one that occurred in the 19th century. However, reconstruction efforts in recent decades have allowed this historical structure to be re-erected and valued. Currently, it is recognized as an Imóvel de Interesse Público (Property of Public Interest), a classification that underscores its importance as a cultural and heritage landmark. The Pillory of Alandroal today serves as a point of reference and an invitation to reflect on the town's past and the evolution of its local power.
