Located in the picturesque urbanization of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, the Chapel of São Sebastião stands on a discrete elevation, dominating the historic Largo Major Roçadas, once known as Terreiro do Mártir. Its isolated position offers a unique perspective on the urban surroundings of Alandroal, inviting contemplation and a moment of tranquility in the heart of the locality. Near its southwest facade, there is a Station of the Cross, establishing a symbolic link to the local religious path.
The history of the Chapel of São Sebastião dates back to the 16th century, when its foundation was promoted by the Senate of Alandroal. Since then, this place of worship has maintained its religious function, serving as the venue for annual festivities dedicated to the patron saint, a tradition that lasted until the early 20th century. The building underwent several periods of transformation, notably its reconstruction in the 18th century and the extensive renovation works that followed the great earthquake of 1755, an event that left visible marks and prompted significant interventions. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, local master carpenters and stonemasons contributed to its evolution, giving it the appearance that can be appreciated today.
The Chapel of São Sebastião features religious architecture that combines elements of the Baroque and Neoclassical styles. With a simple longitudinal plan, the chapel consists of a nave, a chancel, and a sacristy, all rectangular in shape and covered by barrel vaults. The main facade, marked by a simple portal and a pierced oculus, culminates in an elegant gable with a projecting cornice, topped by a discreet bell tower with a bell.
Inside, what is most surprising is the richness of its mural painting. Up to one-third of the elevations, the walls simulate a vibrant series of tiles, alternating shades of blue and yellow, topped by a band decorated with volutes and vegetal motifs. The upper two-thirds of the elevations and the vaults reveal elaborate painting that imitates stone, with meticulous stereotomy. In the chancel, an ingenious trompe l'oeil creates the illusion of perfect architectural symmetry, with painted windows and doors mirroring the real ones. On the main altar, in neoclassical style, traces of earlier paintings can still be glimpsed, with floral and vegetal motifs, testifying to the layers of history and art that the chapel encapsulates.
