District: Évora > Portel > Portel > A Silarca
Situated at one of the entrances to the village of Portel, this roundabout is an urban landmark that welcomes those arriving in the locality. Its strategic position serves as a link to Municipal Road 538, facilitating access and circulation in the urban area of Portel. The arrangement of this space contributes to the dignification and enhancement of this access to the village.
The place known as "A Silarca" celebrates one of the region's most unique and valued natural products: the mushroom Amanita ponderosa, popularly known as silarca. Through sculptural pieces representing this mushroom, the space pays homage to its cultural importance and its intrinsic link to the Alentejo montado (cork oak and holm oak forests), a fundamental element of Portel's landscape and identity.
Silarca is a particularly prized mushroom species that grows naturally beneath the soil of cork oak and holm oak montados, typical of Alentejo. Its appearance, usually between February and April, depends on favorable climatic conditions. Silarca harvesting is a traditional activity that requires an experienced eye to identify the subtle signs that betray its presence in the ground. This mushroom is highly sought after, standing out for its unique value and flavor in local cuisine.
The requalification project for this roundabout transformed it into a prominent space within Portel's urban fabric. With a design that integrates different pavement typologies, a visually appealing environment was created. The sculptural elements, which remarkably reproduce the silarcas, give the place a distinctive character, reinforcing the village's identity and its connection with the municipality's natural resources.
