In the district of Coimbra, within the National Forest of Vale de Canas, stands a natural landmark of exceptional dimension. This forested area, known for its arboreal richness, provides an environment of tranquility and fresh air, functioning as a true green lung for the locality. The site where this remarkable tree is found is in the Vale de Canas area, a setting that allows appreciation of its grandeur in a predominantly natural landscape.

The National Forest of Vale de Canas invites contemplation and contact with nature, offering a serene refuge just a few kilometers from the urban center of Coimbra. It is in this space that one can observe up close the magnitude of this tree, which stands out impressively in the surrounding landscape.

An Imposing Giant

This imposing specimen of Eucalyptus diversicolor, also known as Karri, is recognized for its remarkable stature and is often associated with the title of "tallest tree in Europe." However, it is important to note that this title is contested by other arboreal specimens on the continent, including Douglas Firs which sometimes reach or exceed similar heights in other regions of Portugal, such as the Serra da Lousã. With a recorded height of 73 meters in 2017, its dimension is comparable to that of an approximately 25-story building, making it one of Portugal's most impressive natural elements.

Classified as one of the "Monumental Trees of Portugal" by the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF), this tree is a living testament to the value of natural heritage. Its dominant presence in the National Forest of Vale de Canas offers a unique perspective on the growth capacity of these species and nature's resilience, representing a botanical landmark of great relevance.

Roots of a Centenary History

Approximately 140 years old, this imposing Karri has roots in a history that dates back to the arrival of eucalyptus in Europe. Originating from Australia, Eucalyptus diversicolor was introduced to Portugal around 1854. Initially, the species was valued for both ornamental purposes, beautifying parks and gardens, and for the production of timber and eucalyptol.

Its longevity and continued robustness make this tree a symbol of species' resistance and adaptation over time. Throughout more than a century, it has witnessed the passage of generations and remains a natural reference, a true botanical monument that attests to its origin and its remarkable capacity for development on Portuguese soil.
