The pillory stands in the centre of the old Praça Velha, currently named Praça General Freire de Andrade, in the parish of Buarcos and São Julião. It stands isolated, dominating the open space around it and offering an unobstructed view of the urban surroundings.
This monument is located near historic buildings with Pombaline facades, which accentuates its character as a central element in the heart of the old city.
Commissioned in 1782, the pillory bears witness to the elevation of Figueira da Foz to a town, which occurred in 1771, and serves as a landmark of royal jurisdiction. In 1910, it was officially classified as a National Monument, reinforcing its status as protected heritage.
Throughout the centuries, the pillory has remained a symbol of judicial autonomy and local power, and is today regarded as a point of reference for those seeking to understand the city's historical evolution.
Built from lioz stone, it features a base composed of five stepped tiers that lead to a pedestal with a curved profile.
On this stands a column with a twisted shaft, whose spiral confers visual dynamism to the structure.
At the top, the composite capital supports the national coat of arms, recalling the royal link of the past. The small conical pinnacle that tops the column adds a Baroque touch of great elegance.
The surrounding area offers a tranquil environment, without obstructions that distract the eye from the pillory. The Portuguese pavement highlights the simplicity and harmonizes with the monument's limestone.
It is a privileged location for careful observation of the sculptural details, as well as for capturing photographs that highlight the interaction between the historic landmark and the urban layout of Figueira da Foz.
