The Chapel of São Romão is located in Coimbra, in the Santo António dos Olivais area. It is found near the end of Calçada do Gato, in an urban setting that once belonged to an estate of the Marquesses of Pomares. The chapel is notably leaned against and annexed to the ruins of an old house, which gives it a distinctive atmosphere and a visible connection to its historical past.

Architecture and Distinctive Features

Built in the 19th century, this small chapel features a curious circular plan, a characteristic uncommon for religious buildings of this size. Its facade is marked by a simple doorway, topped by a triangular pediment. Above the entrance, a horizontal oval oculus stands out, a detail that adds interest to its modest but original architecture.

Interior Environment and Iconography

Inside, the chapel's ceiling features stucco with discreet moldings. A brick arch houses what appears to be a simulated altar, suggesting that a larger chancel was, at one time, integrated into the adjacent house. The image of the patron saint, São Romão, is a popular style sculpture. In it, the saint is depicted holding a palm and a cleaver in his right hand, with a helmet positioned at his feet, details that illustrate his traditional iconography.

The Legacy and the Passage of Time

Recognized for its patrimonial and cultural value, the Chapel of São Romão is listed as Built Heritage of Cultural Interest by the Coimbra Municipal Council. Although it was restored in 1995 by a Festival Committee, its unprotected location at a crossroads, surrounded by new road layouts, led to significant degradation. This fact highlights the fragility of heritage in the face of urban transformations, making the chapel a point of reflection on the importance of its conservation.
