The Coimbra Weir-Bridge stands over the Mondego River, in the western part of the city, connecting different banks and urban areas. Its strategic position offers a unique perspective on the river and the surrounding landscape. It is an accessible location, integrated into an environment where the serenity of riparian nature meets the dynamism of Coimbra city, inviting strolls and contemplation.
This infrastructure, whose construction took place between 1978 and 1981, was designed with a fundamental dual purpose for Coimbra. On one hand, it allowed for the creation of a permanent water expanse in the Mondego River bed in front of the city, a scenic element that transformed the waterline. On the other hand, the weir bridge established a crucial road crossing, facilitating circulation and connection between different areas of the city, namely as part of the EN1/IC2 route.
In addition to its structural and scenic function, the Coimbra Weir-Bridge plays a relevant role in conserving the fluvial ecosystem. Initially, the presence of the weir restricted the migration of certain fish species. However, with the inauguration of a fish passage on the left bank, the river regained its continuity. This measure now allows species such as the sea lamprey, shad, or allis shad to overcome the barrier, contributing to the vitality and biodiversity of the Mondego. It is an example of coexistence between human engineering and nature.
The Coimbra Weir-Bridge and its surroundings provide an inviting setting for moments of relaxation and outdoor activity. The water expanse created by the weir offers a vast and tranquil surface, ideal for enjoying the landscape. Along the banks, there are trails and a pedestrian street that allow for walks or bike rides. It is common to observe river life, from fishermen to water sports enthusiasts, making the place a meeting point and appreciation for nature.
