The place where São Gião River Beach is located today has a peculiar history dating back to 1970. It was implemented within the complex of the Albino Mendes da Silva Foundation, resulting from the vision of a benefactor who acquired ten hectares of this riverside forest area. What makes this space particularly interesting is how it managed to make use of and integrate the old infrastructures of a farm. One can still observe the vestiges of a traditional mill, an olive press, the farm house, and even an old textile factory, which give the place a unique character and a connection to the region's rural past.
São Gião River Beach offers an extensive bathing area, characterized by an abundant presence of flora. The space is shaded by a diversity of trees, including oaks, cedars, pines, poplars, willows, and plane trees, which contribute to a fresh and inviting atmosphere. To enrich the bathing experience, improvements have been made over time, such as the construction of a dam that allows for increased water depth, and the installation of a diving board, inviting more dynamic dives into the Alva River.
Designed to welcome all visitors, São Gião River Beach provides support infrastructure aimed at ensuring a comfortable and safe stay. The site features leisure areas, ideal for moments of relaxation and picnics with family or friends. A notable aspect is the attention to accessibility, with adapted routes for people with reduced mobility and the availability of information in braille, demonstrating a commitment to inclusion. Bathers' safety is ensured by the presence of a lifeguard during the bathing season, and there are sanitary facilities and a first-aid post.
