Penalva de Alva, formerly known as Penalva de São Gião, was an independent municipality before becoming a parish of Oliveira do Hospital. The pillory is a testament to its former autonomy and is located in front of the old Town Hall.
According to a note from the City Council, the current stone pillory replaced a previous one made of wood, a common practice until the 16th century.
This pillory not only marks the former administrative importance of the locality but is also a typical example of Manueline architecture in Portugal.
