Situated in the heart of the locality of Côja, Arganil municipality, this pillory majestically rises in a wide paved square. Its central location on Rua Dr. José Albano de Oliveira makes it an easily accessible landmark, inviting a pause to appreciate the tranquil atmosphere of the village. The monument stands out in the urban surroundings, offering an open and inviting space for its observation and contemplation.
The Pillory of Coja dates back to the 16th century, serving as a testament to the history and autonomy of the locality. Its construction is likely contemporary with the charter granted by D. Manuel I in 1514, a document that symbolized the attribution of rights and privileges to Côja. Originally, these landmarks were the center of justice administration and the affirmation of municipal power, marking the authority of a town. The historical and cultural value of the Pillory of Coja has been recognized since 1933, when it was classified as a Property of Public Interest, highlighting its importance in national heritage.
Built from solid granite ashlar, the Pillory of Coja presents an elegant and robust structure. It rests on a quadrangular base of steps that elevate the monument. Its column, of hexagonal section and with a torus-shaped base, culminates in a distinctive finial. This finial is notable for its vegetal motifs, reminiscent of acanthus leaves, a common decorative element in the Manueline period. Although the current exemplar is a reconstruction carried out in the 20th century, efforts were made to preserve the original design and, whenever possible, integrate fragments of the primitive Manueline pillory, keeping its historical essence alive.
Currently, the Pillory of Coja transcends its original judicial function, establishing itself as a cultural landmark and a point of interest in Côja's urban landscape. It represents a tangible link to the village's past, inviting a brief stop to reflect on the history that shaped these lands. It is an element that enriches the square, providing a backdrop for local life and for the discovery of Côja, serving as a point of contemplation and appreciation of heritage.
