The Vale das Flores Park is located in the city of Coimbra, within the Quinta da Boavista area. This green space forms a continuous corridor that extends through a relevant urban area, connecting the surroundings of the Norton de Matos Health Center to the area near the Skate Park, beneath the Rainha Santa Isabel Bridge. Its position allows it to be an accessible point in the city's urban fabric.

An Urban Green Refuge

The Vale das Flores Park is a remarkable example of an urban forest, covering about two hectares. Its creation resulted from a careful intervention, focused on eradicating invasive plant species that previously dominated the site, such as cane fields and Pampas grass. In their place, hundreds of new trees and thousands of shrubs were planted (specifically, 405 trees and 2,440 shrubs), contributing to the densification and diversification of the available natural environments. This effort transformed a neglected space into a green lung, enriching local biodiversity and offering a renewed environment to enjoy.

Design and Connectivity in the City

The design of the Vale das Flores Park reveals a concern for its integration into the urban landscape. Part of the project included the creation of visual screens, designed to soften the presence of urban structures like viaducts and to mitigate the impact of road traffic. This approach allowed for the conception of a space where the tranquility of nature coexists with the city surroundings. Furthermore, the park incorporates a continuous path, ideal for relaxing walks or bicycle rides, taking advantage of its connection to an already existing cycle path that runs along one of the area's main avenues. Its conception aligns with a broader plan to strengthen Coimbra's tree structure, promoting environmental quality and the creation of green axes that redefine urban areas.
