The Paço da Ega stands on top of a hill, in the peaceful locality of Ega, in the municipality of Condeixa-a-Nova. Its elevated position offers unobstructed views over the surrounding landscape. The building is situated within a vast property, extending approximately twenty thousand square meters, which includes a centuries-old forest. This green space is composed of various tree species, such as oaks, cork oaks, holm oaks, pines, and olive trees, contributing to a natural and tranquil environment.
The roots of the Paço da Ega delve deep into history, dating back to a former Moorish fortification. In the 12th century, the Knights Templar built a castle upon these foundations. With the extinction of the Order of the Temple in the 14th century, the property became part of the Order of Christ, transforming into one of its most important commendams. The building underwent a significant transformation in the early 16th century, when the old castle was adapted and expanded, giving rise to the Paço known today.
The architecture of the Paço da Ega is a testament to the various eras that shaped it. The interventions carried out in the 16th century, particularly following a visitation by the Order of Christ, introduced elements that are still visible today. It is possible to observe Manueline details in several doors and windows of the building. Furthermore, the Paço incorporates some Roman stones into its structure, suggesting the existence of a prior Roman structure on the site. Recognizing its value, this monument is classified as a Property of Public Interest, and a recent restoration has ensured the preservation of its remarkable legacy.
