The Professor Álvaro Viana de Lemos Municipal Museum is located in Lousã, in a central area known as Cruz de Ferro. It is housed in the historic center of the town, occupying a building with its own identity: the Casa do Coronel Tenreiro. This construction, dating from 1901, was rehabilitated to house the museum. Its location in the urban core makes it easily accessible to those visiting Lousã.
Reopened in 2013, the museum revitalized the historic Casa do Coronel Tenreiro. The recovery of this early 20th-century building allowed for the creation of a suitable space for its museological function, while honoring the initial objectives outlined by Professor Álvaro Viana de Lemos, the figure who gave the institution its name. It is a place that combines the building's history with the museum's cultural purpose.
The museum presents a very diverse collection, resulting from both the original collection and numerous donations from Lousã residents. The holdings include sections dedicated to sacred art, weaponry, and archaeology, offering different perspectives on the region's history and culture. Also noteworthy is a collection of painting, covering periods from the 16th to the 19th century, featuring examples of regional painting and naïf painting. In addition to these areas, visitors can find collections of books, coins, prints, and other objects that bear witness to the past.
Inside the museum, there are different spaces designed for the visitor's experience. There are rooms dedicated to the permanent exhibition of the collection, allowing exploration of the various collections. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, which may feature works of painting, sculpture, photography, or other art forms, ensuring dynamic content. The building also features an auditorium and houses the Schist Villages Welcome Center, serving as a central information point for those exploring this network of villages.
