The Chapel of Saint Anthony is located within the imposing Montemor-o-Velho Castle, in a strategic position, next to the clock tower and integrated into the barbican line. When visiting the castle, you will find this space in the southern surroundings, making it a natural part of a discovery route through the town's heritage.
The history of the Chapel of Saint Anthony is rich and multifaceted, with its origins debated between the 11th and 16th centuries. It played a fundamental role as the first mother church of Salvador in Montemor-o-Velho. Over time, it underwent several interventions, particularly in the 19th century, which altered its original appearance. More recently, the chapel benefited from a significant rehabilitation project, recovering its essence and allowing its history to be rediscovered and valued.
This chapel features a single-nave plan, complemented by three side chapels. Its facade has simple lines, adorned with pinnacles. Observing the main entrance, the door topped by a window and an inscription stand out, inviting contemplation. Inside, the visitor's eyes will be drawn to a full arch, which, although devoid of excessive ornamentation, reveals the solidity and purity of its structure.
Recent rehabilitation works brought to light highly relevant archaeological discoveries. The works allowed for the recovery of vestiges that tell the history of the occupation of this site, including human and faunal osteological materials, ceramic fragments, malacological elements (molluscs and crustaceans), and numismatic pieces. Particular attention was given to the recovery of a niche, adding an extra layer of interest to the building.
After its careful rehabilitation, the Chapel of Saint Anthony now stands as a dynamic center for cultural enjoyment in Montemor-o-Velho. This venue regularly hosts various exhibitions, such as the permanent display "Men and Women of Montemor-o-Velho," as well as temporary events. Its reconversion aims to stimulate visits and knowledge of local history and culture, fully integrating it into the life of the town.
