Located in Vila Nova, in the municipality of Penacova, the Livraria do Mondego viewpoint is strategically positioned on the left bank of the Mondego River. From this point, visitors can admire the river landscape and the impressive rock formation that characterizes the location.
Its location offers a privileged perspective of the river valley, framed by the local orography, inviting a pause to observe the natural surroundings.
The viewpoint is known for the Livraria do Mondego, a remarkable rock formation that immediately captures attention. Its name derives from the resemblance of the high vertical layers of Ordovician quartzites to books arranged on a shelf.
Sculpted by the Mondego River itself over more than 400 million years, this structure is an example of the force of nature and the region's geology. Classified as a Geomonument by Galopim de Carvalho, this rock formation is one of Portugal's most unique natural monuments. The rock also includes traces of an ancient sandy beach, about 450 million years old, whose symmetrical crests suggest the action of primitive tides.
Beyond the imposing rock formation, the viewpoint provides an immersion into the local biodiversity. The surrounding vegetation, typical of riverbanks, includes species such as willows, ashes, and alders, which blend with elements of Mediterranean flora, such as the strawberry tree.
It is also a suitable place for wildlife observation, with birds such as the kingfisher and the white-breasted cormorant making an appearance, and the otter seeking refuge on the banks of the Mondego. The rock fissures also shelter characteristic plants, such as wall rue and wild pinks, which enrich the natural environment of the place.
