The Choupal National Forest is located northwest of Coimbra, next to the Mondego River, and is accessible via National Road 111 (Coimbra-Figueira da Foz) or the Coimbra-B train station.
Created in the late 18th century to combat the effects of floods and silting of the Mondego River. The plantations helped stabilize the riverbanks and protect nearby agricultural fields.
With approximately 80 hectares, the forest extends along 2 km along the river. It houses various forest species, such as poplars, plane trees, black walnut trees and swamp cypresses, being considered one of Coimbra's green lungs.
The Mata do Choupal is popular among locals for walking, running, cycling and picnics. The space offers hiking trails, sports areas, a fitness circuit and areas for families.
Inside the forest there is a picnic park, a bar, sports areas and an equestrian center. There are also walking trails and an equestrian trail.
After Storm Leslie, in 2021 a recovery project was carried out with the pruning and cutting of damaged trees, recovery of paths and reforestation with native species.
The Mata do Choupal is immortalized in Coimbra fado and poetry. It is a place of tranquility, much appreciated for relaxing and enjoying nature.
The forest is well located and easily accessible, both by car and by train. It offers a combination of activities for different tastes, from sports to quiet family leisure.
