Location and Setting

The Quiaios National Dune Forest extends through the locality of Quiaios, in the municipality of Figueira da Foz, district of Coimbra. With an approximate area of 600 hectares, this coastal forest plays a fundamental role in protecting the dunes and stabilizing the soil, forming a natural barrier between the ocean and the interior.

Its location next to the coastline gives it particular landscape and ecological characteristics, where the forest is in constant dialogue with the dune system, creating a distinct and relevant environment for the region.

A Unique Ecosystem

Predominantly forested with maritime pine, the Quiaios National Dune Forest hosts a remarkable biological diversity. Within it, it integrates a valuable system of freshwater lagoons, such as Lagoa da Vela and Lagoa das Braças, which have formed between the dunes and are surrounded by lush vegetation.

These lagoons are sites of great ecological value, functioning as important habitats for various aquatic species and birds, particularly for birdwatching of migratory birds that find refuge and food here throughout the year.

History, Protection, and Leisure

Acquired by the State in the early 20th century and since then under the management of forestry services, the Quiaios National Dune Forest is a remarkable example of reforestation and conservation. Its existence is crucial for the preservation of local fauna and flora, playing a vital protective role for the coastal environment.

Despite having been severely affected by past fires, it has been the target of various recovery and rehabilitation measures, establishing itself today as an important natural refuge. The forest is also a widely used space for outdoor leisure activities, inviting to walks, picnics, and bike rides along its extensive network of forest paths, with about 38 kilometers of forest roads.

An Environmental Knowledge Center

Inside the Quiaios National Dune Forest, you will find the Manuel Alberto Rei Environmental Education Center. This space is dedicated to the valorization and dissemination of the local natural heritage, offering visitors an opportunity to deepen their knowledge.

Through an exhibition focused on the fauna, flora, and history of the forest, including dune recovery work, the center provides an educational perspective on the importance of conservation. It also has resources for pedagogical activities, enriching the experience of those seeking to better understand this unique ecosystem.
