Jesuit Past and Scientific Vocation

The Chemistry Laboratory was designed for the experimental teaching of chemistry, reflecting the importance of science in university life. However, archaeological excavations on site revealed an even deeper history: the 18th-century building was erected on the foundations of a 17th-century refectory, an integral part of a complex of Jesuit colleges. These discoveries brought to light, remarkably preserved, elements such as windows, a pulpit, and the foundations of the old kitchens, offering a tangible glimpse into the presence of the Society of Jesus.

An Example of Redevelopment

The transformation of the Chemistry Laboratory into a space with a museological function is a testament to the ability to reconcile history with modernity. The architectural project that guided this redevelopment was widely recognized, having been distinguished with prestigious awards, such as the Diogo de Castilho in 2007 and the ENOR in 2009. This architectural valorization underscores the care and vision in preserving and adapting this heritage for future generations.

The Heart of the Science Museum

The Chemistry Laboratory was the starting point for the University of Coimbra Science Museum, inaugurating its first phase in 2006. It is in this space that visitors can explore the permanent exhibition "Secrets of Light and Matter," an interdisciplinary display that brings together examples from the University's vast scientific collections. The relevance and innovation of this science hub were distinguished with the Micheletti Award in 2008, which annually recognizes the most outstanding European museum in the field of science, technology, and industry, validating its importance in the museum landscape.
