Situated in the Portela area, in Travanca do Mondego (Penacova), the Church of São Tiago stands on a gentle plateau, surrounded by typical houses and Mediterranean vegetation. The sloping terrain allows it to offer a perspective over the Mondego valley and the agricultural fields that stretch to the south.
Access is gained directly from the village's main street, through a white ashlar gate that leads to the front churchyard, paved with irregular flagstones and punctuated by a small garden of native plants.
Dedicated to Saint James, this church likely has medieval roots, although its current design reflects expansion and restoration works carried out in the 17th and 18th centuries. Throughout the centuries, it has remained a center of local devotion, hosting processions related to sowing and harvesting.
Inside, the gilded carvings and tiles with religious motifs illustrate the patronage of local families, while tombstones and commemorative plaques document episodes of parish life and the names of former vicars.
The main body of the church features a whitewashed facade, punctuated by curved-lintel windows framed by granite. The main portal, of simple composition, is topped by a triangular tympanum and crowned by a stone cross. Along the eaves, several pinnacles are visible, emphasizing the volume's verticality.
At the southern base stands a rectangular bell tower, open with oculus windows where the bells rest. The gabled roof, covered with red ceramic tiles, highlights the contrast between the white masonry and the green of the adjacent fields. The churchyard, dotted with almond trees and wild shrubs, invites contemplation in a tranquil environment where the built heritage integrates with the rural landscape.
