The Parish Church of São Facundo is located in the urbanization of São Facundo, integrated into the locality of Antuzede and Vil de Matos, in the municipality of Coimbra. This site is situated in a quieter and more embracing area, characteristic of the communities surrounding the city of Coimbra, offering a peaceful environment that invites reflection and appreciation of the local heritage.
This Catholic temple is a testament to the history that shaped the region, with origins possibly dating back to the 13th century. Over the centuries, the Parish Church of São Facundo underwent various transformations, incorporating elements of Romanesque, Mannerist, and Baroque styles. It is a property classified as being of Public Interest, acknowledging its relevance to national heritage. Its modest size was suitable for the small parish that existed independently until the mid-19th century, and whose presentation was linked to both the University of Coimbra and the Order of Christ.
Its foundation is believed to have been built upon an even older chapel. Proof of the site's historical depth are the archaeological discoveries made in 1997, which revealed traces of a primitive rammed earth floor and medieval tombs, in addition to fragments of Roman pottery, indicating human occupation long before the church itself.
Observing the main facade, its arched portal stands out, along with the presence of sculpted high-relief figures, some of which are interpreted as representations of the Holy Trinity, the Virgin with the Child, a warrior, and a winged figure. The medieval bell tower, with its three bell openings, adds a touch of distinction to the structure.
Inside, the ambiance invites contemplation, with white walls highlighting the artistic elements. The altars deserve special attention, particularly the main altarpiece in gilded carving, of national style, adorned with twisted columns and angels, and the side altarpiece, of notable artistic quality, displaying rich Rococo decoration in polychrome carving and gilded details. Two medieval arcosolia, which once served as tombs, are also preserved, along with traces of the original pulpit. The old funerary chapel, now a sacristy, still holds indications of mural paintings.
Local tradition associates the church's patron saint, São Facundo, with a Galician knight who, upon seeking refuge in this temple to escape the Moors, was martyred on site, leading to his canonization and the subsequent dedication of the church to his memory.
