São Pedro Chapel

Simple Architecture

The São Pedro Chapel features a rectangular layout with a simple structure, with masses arranged horizontally.

Gabled Roof

The chapel's roof is gabled, giving the building a traditional appearance.

Decorated Facade

The main facade has decorative details, such as a central portal with pilasters and marked plinths, topped by a decorative fountain with foliage, scallops and putti.

Architectural Elements

Corinthian capitals, prismatic urns with fogachos, triangular pediment, cartouche, cross and pyramidal crowns are some of the highlighted architectural elements.

Natural Lighting

There is a rectangular window on the south side of the chapel, allowing light to enter the nave.

Unique Interior

The interior of the chapel has a single nave, with a wooden ceiling and three altarpieces.

Location

The Nossa Senhora da Alegria Chapel is located in the parish of Almalaguês, in the Municipality of Coimbra, Portugal.

17th Century

This chapel is part of a set of 17th-century buildings, dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Alegria, found throughout the country.

Classified as a Monument of Public Interest

Since 2011, the chapel has been classified as a Monument of Public Interest.

History

The construction of the chapel was started by order of the parish priest Teodósio de Abreu in 1634, according to a Latin inscription engraved on the pulpit.

Unique Architecture

The chapel has a longitudinal layout with a single nave, chancel and sacristy on the left side. Highlights include the chalice-shaped pulpit, the gilded carvings on the chancel altarpiece, and the main facade ornamented with a triangular pediment and a barred window.

Ex-votos

Inside the chapel, it is possible to find several ex-voto offerings, including paintings, wax figures and chains (shackles) with a curious legend.

Roman Ruins

About 300 meters east of the chapel, there are Roman ruins that were discovered in 2011 during the construction of the new IP (road), providing a unique archaeological experience for visitors.
