The Mother Church of Granja do Ulmeiro stands in the urbanization of Casal dos Galegos, in the heart of the locality of Granja do Ulmeiro, which is part of the municipality of Soure. Its presence marks the center of the village, serving as a landmark for those walking the streets and encountering local life. The building gently asserts itself within its urban setting, inviting tranquil observation.
This temple has its roots in an older hermitage, dedicated to Saint Gabriel, whose foundation is attributed to Infante D. Henrique in the 15th century. However, the history of the site where the church stands dates back to much earlier times. In the atrium, archaeological vestiges such as tombs and Roman pottery objects were discovered, suggesting an ancient and continuous settlement of this area, bearing witness to a long connection between the space and the communities that established themselves there over the centuries.
The church as it stands today is the result of successive expansion and restoration works that have shaped it over time. Inside, the main altarpiece stands out, a gilded carved piece dating from the late 17th century, enriched by Solomonic columns adorned with vine motifs. At the center, a tabernacle of considerable size, and at the top, the national coat of arms and the cross of the patrons. Next to the altar, there are stone sculptures of Saint Gabriel, the patron saint of the parish, and a remarkable Gothic image of the Holy Trinity, from the early 16th century. Two side chapels complement the space, one of which houses an 18th-century altarpiece with a relief of Saint Michael and the souls. Interestingly, two 17th-century stone bas-reliefs, depicting Saint George and Saint Martin, formerly next to the altar, are now visible at the entrance to the main staircase.
In front of the Mother Church, a calvary cross with a Doric column stands prominently. Originally built in 1613 and later reconstructed in 1910, this stone element is a landmark that completes the church's facade. At the base of the calvary cross, fragments of an ancient Latin inscription can be glimpsed, referring to the faith and values of the era in which it was erected. The Mother Church is the center of devotion to Saint Gabriel Archangel, patron saint of Granja do Ulmeiro, and reflects the strong connection of the local community to its history and spiritual traditions.
