The Mother Church of Condeixa is located in the town of Condeixa-a-Nova, a village that stretches across an area rich in history and unique landscape. Its presence marks a reference point in the area, inviting a moment of quiet observation of its exterior and surroundings.
The history of the Mother Church of Condeixa dates back to the 16th century, when it was erected to serve the growing population of the then newly-designated village of Condeixa-a-Nova. Its construction, which began around the same period when D. Manuel I granted a charter to the village, resulted from an agreement between the residents and the Monastery of Santa Cruz de Coimbra. This joint effort allowed for the creation of a new spiritual center for the community, under the invocation of Saint Christina, replacing previous temples.
Upon visiting the Church, one's gaze is drawn to an interesting fusion of styles. Evidence of its 16th-century origin is visible in the baptismal font and the chancel, which retain elements of the Manueline style. Later, in the 18th century, the gilded carved altarpiece was added, enriching its interior. A significant chapter in its history occurred in 1811, when it was damaged by troops, leading to a reconstruction in 1821. This intervention gave it the neoclassical appearance it presents today, making it an example of resilience and adaptation over the centuries. The building is recognized as a Property of Public Interest.
