The Church of São Pedro de Arganil is the oldest monument in the municipality of Arganil, dating back to the late 13th century.
Located near the Alva River, the church offers a picturesque setting in an area with archaeological discoveries.
The church was founded by Fernão Rodrigues Redondo and his wife, D. Marinha Afonso, who were the donatários (lords) of the region at the time.
The building is known for its massive and austere construction, with three naves and apsidal chapels, as well as a wooden roof.
The church was built with irregular blocks, predominantly thick rolled pebbles, although the corners, openings, and arches are made of stonework, often carved from local sandstone.
The interior of the church is characterized by three naves divided by two arcades with three spans each. These arches are simple, wide, and with discrete chamfers.
The church has three doors, including the main one, all with pointed arches and cut edges, architectural details that attract attention.
Inside the church, visitors will find a significant image of Saint Peter, sculpted in limestone and dated from the 15th century.
