The Church of Lourosa is situated in the tranquil locality of the same name, within the municipality of Oliveira do Hospital. It is found in an area that suggests a deep history of human occupation, with lands historically conducive to agriculture and pastoralism, an environment that shaped its very origin and permanence over the centuries. The location offers an atmosphere of serenity, inviting an experience of discovery within a typical regional setting.
This temple is distinguished by being one of the oldest churches in Portugal, erected in a period prior to the founding of the Kingdom itself. A stone inscription, dated 912 Common Era, attests to its remote construction, making it a rare testament to the architecture and faith of yesteryear. The site where the church now stands has vestiges of being a place of worship since at least the end of the Bronze Age, with indications of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter, whose stones were partly reused in the Christian edifice. In the vicinity, a Visigothic cemetery with anthropomorphic tombs reveals even older layers of human and cultural presence on this site.
The Church of Lourosa is a remarkable example of pre-Romanesque style, exhibiting marked Mozarabic and Visigothic influences, a unique style on Portuguese territory. Its basilica plan, in the shape of a cross, with a salient transept and a tripartite head, is characteristic. The interior is divided into three naves, separated by horseshoe arches, and is preceded by a narthex on the main facade. The absence of paintings or images in its interior confers an austere simplicity, highlighting the purity of its architectural lines. One of its rarest elements are the ajimez windows, the only ones known in Portugal from the medieval period, which reinforce its connection to the art of the Reconquista, with clear Asturian influence. Its importance lies in establishing a bridge between the Visigothic and Romanesque styles.
The rediscovery of the historical and architectural value of the Church of Lourosa in the early 20th century led to its classification as a National Monument in 1916. Since then, it has undergone significant restoration work aimed at recovering its original design, removing later interventions to reveal its primitive beauty. A fascinating aspect is its unusual dedication to "The Chair of Saint Peter of Antioch," the only church in Portugal with this patron saint, evoking Antioch's relevance in the history of early Christianity. The church is also included in European itineraries highlighting the Arab presence and was recognized as one of the 7 Cultural Wonders of the municipality of Oliveira do Hospital. It is a pilgrimage site for scholars and heritage enthusiasts, a living testament to over a millennium of uninterrupted Christian worship.
