The Church of Aldeia das Dez is located in São Bartolomeu Churchyard, in the heart of this locality belonging to the municipality of Oliveira do Hospital. Its central position in the village makes it a landmark and a striking element in the local urban landscape.
The history of the Church of Aldeia das Dez dates back to the 16th century. In 1543, at the time of the parish's creation, a temple dedicated to Saint Bartholomew already existed. The building we see today began its construction in the 18th century. Due to population growth and the need for a larger space for the faithful, the parish priest Manuel António Pereira began the construction of the new church in 1727, which was inaugurated and blessed in January 1764. It is a testament to the religious and architectural evolution of the community throughout the centuries.
The church's facade, with its elegant design, captures attention due to its imposing presence. It features a longitudinal plan and is enriched by details in granite stonework, such as the quoin stones and the prominent cornice. The pilasters divide the openings, highlighting its structure. The main portal, with its molded frame and arch, is crowned by a quatrefoil oculus. To the left, stands the bell tower, topped by a bulbous stone roof, giving it a distinctive silhouette on the village's skyline.
Inside, the church reveals a single nave, housing two chapels and a set of five altars. The Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is located on the Gospel side, while the Calvary Chapel, on the Epistle side, displays a remarkable set of 18th-century wooden sculptures, almost life-size, depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ. The side altars are dedicated to Our Lady of Conception and Saint Joseph. The main altar, in turn, is dominated by a Mannerist painting illustrating the martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew, attributed to the same artist who created the altarpiece of the Church of Saint Bartholomew in Coimbra. Also noteworthy are an 18th-century image of Saint Bartholomew and a rare representation of Saint Theodore. The carved altarpieces, from the second half of the 18th century, complement the artistic richness of the space, along with the choir loft, of unusual design, and a 19th-century tribuna (gallery), the latter being a work of exceptionally high-quality carving.
