The Alqueves Cave is located behind the Convent of Santa Clara and has an inhumation necropolis with 12 tombs. Its history dates back to the 1930s, when archaeological work was carried out in the area.
The cave is also known as Cova da Moura and was initially explored in 1898 by Santos Rocha. He collected archaeological materials that helped identify it as a Neolithic necropolis.
In 1899, Bernardino Marchado, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Coimbra, carried out new explorations in the cave. At the beginning of the 20th century, in 1900, 1901 and 1906, Mesquita de Figueiredo also conducted excavations that confirmed the funerary nature of the cave.
The most recent archaeological excavations took place between 1985 and 1987, revealing more information about the history of the cave.
