Located in the municipality of Arganil, near the village of Benfeita, Fraga da Pena is deeply embedded within the Mata da Margaraça, a dense forest that is part of the Serra do Açor Protected Area. Its position in the heart of this natural landscape provides it with an isolated environment of great beauty.
Fraga da Pena reveals itself as a remarkable waterfall, over twenty meters high, where water plunges majestically. This is a place where nature seems untouched, and serenity is only punctuated by the sound of falling water and the chirping of birds. The water shapes the scenery, carving its path through dense vegetation and schist surfaces.
The Fraga da Pena waterfall is the result of a unique geological feature that created a narrow, mountainous valley. In this environment, waters from the Barroca das Degrainhas form an initial pool before flowing down and giving rise to the imposing waterfall. The surroundings are characterized by abundant vegetation covering the schist rocks, creating a verdant and fresh micro-landscape.
To ensure a pleasant and safe visit, Fraga da Pena has benefited from recent improvements. A schist pedestrian platform approximately sixty meters long has been installed, complemented by protective railings. These interventions were designed to make the waterfall accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, while also enhancing the overall safety of the site, which previously could present greater challenges.
