Located in the village of São Silvestre, in the municipality of Coimbra, the wayside cross stands next to an old dirt road, surrounded by oak and cork trees. The surroundings retain a rural character, with a carpet of dry grass and shadows cast by the trees, creating a peaceful atmosphere.
The piece is positioned on a slight rise in the terrain, near a little-used road that connects villages and small farms in the region. The surrounding space invites contemplation, free from dense urban interferences.
Commissioned in 1783 within the scope of the now-extinct Convent of São Marcos, this wayside cross bears witness to the presence of the Hieronymite friars in the region. Although the convent was devastated by a fire in the mid-19th century, the wayside cross remained intact, serving ever since as a religious and cultural landmark.
Recognized as a National Monument in 1910, this element has come to symbolize the monastic heritage and popular devotion, keeping alive the memory of a community that celebrated numerous religious services there.
It rests on an octagonal plinth, composed of simple steps that elevate the main column. The fluted shaft, slightly tapered in section, supports a central knot, a typical 18th-century detail, above which a cross with plain arms rises.
The entire ensemble reveals harmonious proportions, with smooth surfaces and a sober setting, where the fluted shaft draws the eye up to the vertical finish of the cross, evoking tradition and religious simplicity.
The wayside cross benefits from a serene setting, punctuated by birdsong and the gentle rustle of leaves in the wind. The few nearby constructions respect the scale of the monument, allowing it to stand out against the low horizon.
Those who pass by find an ideal spot for a reflective pause, appreciating both the historical value of the piece and the tranquility of the surrounding countryside.
