The Convento de São Francisco is located in Santa Clara, on the left bank of the Mondego River, in Coimbra. Its position offers a unique setting within the city's urban landscape, with a wide perspective over the surrounding area.
The roots of the Convento de São Francisco date back to the early 16th century. Throughout its existence, this remarkable building has had various occupations, transforming from a religious space into a health facility, such as a hospital, then into a military installation, serving as barracks, and later, a textile factory. This succession of functions marks its history, giving it a multifaceted character.
Recently, the Convento de São Francisco underwent a redevelopment project that transformed it, maintaining its original structure and integrating contemporary elements. The result is a harmonious dialogue between 17th-century heritage and a current aesthetic language. This renovation work, signed by architects such as João Luís Carrilho da Graça for the convent's recovery and Gonçalo Byrne for the former church, provided new spaces with modern functionalities, suitable for its current vocation.
Currently, the Convento de São Francisco establishes itself as a dynamic center for culture and congresses in Coimbra. It is a venue that hosts a variety of events, from artistic initiatives to diverse meetings, solidifying its position as a point of reference for the cultural life of the city and the region.
The Convento de São Francisco was designed to be an inclusive space. To ensure accessibility for all visitors, the building is equipped with elevators and ramps, facilitating movement within its facilities.
