The Torre de Anto is located in the Alta area of Coimbra, a district that forms part of the city's historic center. It is situated along the route of the old medieval wall, positioned midway up a gentle slope that descends towards the Mondego river. Its presence in this historic location contributes to the particular ambiance of the urban surroundings.
With origins in the Middle Ages, the Torre de Anto was initially a fundamental part of Coimbra's city defense. Integrated into the medieval wall circuit, it played a strategic role in surveillance. However, with the evolution of the city's needs and the loss of its military function, the building underwent a significant transformation in the first half of the 16th century, being adapted for residential use. Its current appearance largely reflects the alterations made during this period, preserving traces of its long history.
The name by which the tower is widely known today, "Torre de Anto," is due to a particular cultural association. In the late 19th century, this building served as the residence of the illustrious poet António Pereira Nobre during his studies in Coimbra. The poet himself referred to his abode using the abbreviation "Anto." This connection became perpetuated, with a plaque placed on the facade commemorating António Nobre's stay at this location.
With a quadrangular base, the Torre de Anto presents a compact structure. The building rises to four distinct internal floors, which are interconnected by a spiral staircase. Its robust walls are constructed of stone, a material that gives it solidity and durability throughout the centuries. The tower's roof is finished with a four-pitched roof, contributing to its characteristic appearance.
