The Torre da Contenda stands in the city of Coimbra, in the heart of the Alta district, one of its most emblematic historical neighborhoods. Contrary to what is sometimes assumed, the Torre da Contenda was not an integral part of Coimbra's ancient defensive walls. On the contrary, it was a tower of a residential and private nature, established and developed outside the walled circuit of the time, serving as a distinctive element of the aforementioned Paço. A remarkable architectural feature is the arch that, over the street, establishes a unique connection between the tower and the adjacent constructions, which were later transformed into a residence enriched with details of Renaissance influence.
