The Sub-Ripas Palace is located in the heart of the Almedina area, one of Coimbra's oldest and most historic districts. It is integrated into the characteristic urban fabric of this part of the city, known for its narrow streets and traditional atmosphere. Its central position contributes to the unique ambiance of the place.
The history of the Sub-Ripas Palace dates back to its incorporation into an ancient military tower, which was part of Coimbra's primitive wall. Over the centuries, the original structure expanded, annexing adjacent houses that dotted this historic area of the city.
The current configuration of the Sub-Ripas Palace is the result of the union of different constructive volumes. Of particular note is how two original buildings, formerly known as Casa de Cima (Upper House) and Casa de Baixo (Lower House), were connected. This connection was made through the construction of an arch that crosses the street, creating a singular passage and integrating the different parts of the palace over the Almedina's road network.
More than a singular building, the Sub-Ripas Palace is part of an organic complex of constructions and narrow streets that define the character of Almedina. Its presence contributes to the particular atmosphere of this historic area, offering a glimpse into the life and urban evolution of Coimbra over the centuries, in an intimate and traditional setting.
