This viewpoint is located in the Calhabé area, in Coimbra, in a prominent position on the upper third of the hillside. Its elevated placement overlooking the city allows for extensive visibility over the surrounding landscape. It is predominantly south-facing, benefiting from good exposure.
The viewpoint area incorporates a garden that develops on different levels, built to follow the natural slope of the hillside. It begins in a flatter area that functions as a promenade garden, before opening up to the lower levels.
Paths, some paved with cobblestones, invite visitors to explore the garden's expanse, where resting areas with benches can be found. The vegetation includes elements such as plane trees and trimmed hedges, creating a green environment that structures the different terraces. Small staircases connect the various levels of this leisure space.
One of the main attractions of Penedo da Saudade is the vast landscape revealed from this elevated point. It is possible to enjoy a panoramic view over a significant part of the city of Coimbra.
The gaze reaches the course of the Mondego River and the Choupal area on its banks, distinctive elements of the region's geography that complement the view of the urban area.
Penedo da Saudade holds strong symbolism linked to Coimbra's identity. It is a place historically associated with the academic spirit and "saudosismo" (nostalgia/longing), present in the city's imagination and its connection to fado music.
It features a monument dedicated to the poet António Nobre, erected in 1930 and authored by sculptor João Machado Júnior, reinforcing the site's connection with prominent figures of national literature and the student experience in the city.
Throughout the garden, numerous plaques with engraved poems are scattered. These verses are authored by former students and personalities connected to Coimbra's literary and academic life.
This unique feature transforms the viewpoint into a cultural landmark, where the landscape intersects with poetic and sentimental expression, perpetuating the memory and spirit of those who passed through here and were inspired.
