Located in the Alta district of Coimbra, the University of Coimbra Botanical Garden Forest stretches through an intermediate valley, nestled among the historic hills that define the city. It is a green lung integrated into the urban fabric, offering a unique perspective on Coimbra's topography. Its position allows for an immersive nature experience, even in the heart of the city.
This vast forest area, which constitutes a large part of the prestigious University of Coimbra Botanical Garden, has its historical roots in the 18th century. In the mid-19th century, with the extinction of religious orders, the lands of the former São Bento College, which formed this valley, were annexed to the Botanical Garden. This integration significantly expanded the space, transforming it into a place for study and leisure. The Botanical Garden, with its Forest, is today recognized as part of UNESCO World Heritage.
The Forest is a space of great natural richness, characterized by an abundance of exotic trees growing freely, some of them centuries old. Walking along its paths reveals a diversity of species that contribute to a serene and immersive environment. One of the most distinct elements is its unique bamboo grove, whose slender canes rise and intertwine, forming true green "cathedrals" that provide a shady and almost mystical path, inviting contemplation and tranquility.
The Botanical Garden Forest offers a network of paths that invite exploration of its dimensions. Recently, the reopening of some areas has allowed renewed access to this urban lung. As visitors walk the paths, they can find architectural elements that bear witness to the site's history, such as the Three Spouts Fountain and a small chapel, once part of the Benedictine properties. The presence of stone sculptures, rescued from the former São Bento College and now exhibited, adds a cultural layer to the natural experience.
