Jardim da Solum is located in the urban area of Solum, one of Coimbra's neighborhoods known for its more contemporary atmosphere. It is conveniently situated near the Estádio Cidade de Coimbra (Coimbra City Stadium), in the heart of this urban development. One of its borders is flanked by Rua D. João III, a street that, with its cobblestone paving, possesses a particular charm and will soon become a space dedicated exclusively to pedestrian circulation, contributing to a more tranquil and inviting atmosphere.

The Preservation of a Green Space

This garden has a recent history that underscores its value to the city. There was a period when its fate seemed to be transformation into a parking lot, part of the broader Mondego Mobility System project. However, through an initiative by the Coimbra City Council, its preservation was ensured. This decision allowed Jardim da Solum to maintain its identity and function as a public green space, a testament to the commitment to safeguarding natural areas in urban contexts.

Nature and Urban Design

Jardim da Solum is distinguished by its natural composition and careful planning. Currently, it has a series of trees that provide shade and contribute to the air quality in the area. The future requalification project foresees not only the maintenance of these existing arboreal species but also the planting of sixteen more specimens, further enriching the local biodiversity and vegetation. The concern for sustainability is evident in the consideration of using grass grids (permeable pavers) and granite cube paving, solutions that allow soil permeability and prevent its impermeabilization.

An Environment for Leisure and Renewal

With the ongoing and upcoming interventions, Jardim da Solum is being prepared to offer an even more pleasant environment. The transformation of Rua D. João III into a solely pedestrian thoroughfare will foster a calmer and safer environment around the garden. After the completion of the mobility works, the space will be entirely requalified, with the urban arrangement and public garden re-established, ensuring that Jardim da Solum remains a place of leisure and serenity, ideal for moments of pause in Coimbra's urban dynamics.
