Situated in the upper part of the city of Coimbra, the Jardim da Sereia, also known as Santa Cruz Park, is an emblematic green space that harmoniously integrates into the urban landscape. Its location offers a refuge-like environment, where tranquility contrasts with the city's bustle, making it an accessible place for those seeking a moment of peace and natural beauty in the heart of the city.
The Jardim da Sereia is a place with a rich history, dating back to the 12th century, when the property belonged to the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine. However, its current form, as a remarkable space for leisure, meditation, and recreation, was developed in the 18th century, initiated by D. Gaspar da Encarnação. Over the centuries, the garden consolidated its importance, being today classified as a Property of Public Interest, attesting to its cultural and patrimonial relevance for Coimbra.
The garden entrance is marked by an impressive Baroque portico, adorned with sculptures representing Faith, Charity, and Hope, flanked by pavilions displaying mural paintings. Inside, a scenic path unfolds, including a three-tiered waterfall, built with ornamented stones, and a majestic seven-flight staircase. Along this, one can appreciate fountains, water tanks, and benches covered with tiles illustrating landscapes and aquatic motifs. At the top of the staircase, the well-known Nogueira Fountain, or Mermaid Fountain (Fonte da Sereia), features a figure of Triton, which gave rise to the garden's popular name.
Vegetal exuberance is one of the most striking features of the Jardim da Sereia. Its paths are lined with a vast and diverse collection of arboreal and shrub species. Notable large trees include the Himalayan cedar, the Norfolk pine, and the Chinese thuja, which provide shade and coolness. Furthermore, the presence of exotic plants like oleander and azalea, along with dense native vegetation, contributes to an environment of great botanical richness, inviting an immersive and fragrant stroll.
In addition to its architectural and botanical beauty, the Jardim da Sereia hosts an interesting diversity of wildlife that coexists with the urban environment. It is a place where various bird species can be observed, such as the blackbird, known for its melodious song, the blackcap, and the European robin, which move freely among the foliage. The small streams that meander through the park also create a habitat for amphibians like the fire salamander and the marbled newt, adding a touch of living nature to the space.
