A Royal and Curious Origin:

The roots of the Fonte da Manga date back to 1528, when it was conceived for the Monastery of Santa Cruz, then occupied by monks of the Order of Saint Augustine. Its creation is linked to a historical anecdote involving King John III of Portugal. It is said that the monarch, upon visiting the monastery and observing an unused space, sketched right there, on the sleeve of his doublet, the plan for a cloister with a surrounding garden. This improvised drawing gave rise to one of the most unique elements of the city.
