The Vale das Flores Urban Forest is located in the city of Coimbra, specifically in the Arregaça area. This green space is situated next to the Vale das Flores stream, positioned between Avenida Mendes Silva and Rua Cabral Antunes.
Its integration into Coimbra's urban fabric is noteworthy. The forest offers a natural refuge that aims to soften the presence of surrounding urban elements, such as viaducts, and mitigate noise associated with car traffic in the city center.
This urban forest represents a significant effort to bring nature into the city of Coimbra. With an area of almost two hectares, Vale das Flores has been transformed into a spacious and inviting area, designed to be traversable and easily accessible to visitors.
Its main purpose is to create an environment where local biodiversity can flourish, offering visitors an opportunity for direct contact with native vegetation and the waterway that crosses it, thus promoting a sense of well-being in the heart of the urban area.
The creation of the Vale das Flores Urban Forest involved a profound ecological renewal intervention. Invasive plant species, harmful to the local ecosystem, were eradicated, and over 400 trees and approximately 2,400 shrubs were planted.
Species selection prioritized the region's native flora, including oaks, cork oaks, alders, ashes, and laurels. This choice aims to strengthen biodiversity and ensure vegetation adapted to climatic and soil conditions. Simultaneously, the stream was restored, stabilizing its banks and planting vegetation along the waterway, which contributes to humidity regulation and natural shading on hot days.
