The Center of Visual Arts is situated in the heart of the Baixa de Coimbra, in Pátio da Inquisição, a corner of the city's historic urban fabric. It is located in the west wing of the former College of Arts, whose origins date back to the 16th century, integrating into an environment made of stone, courtyards, and buildings with memory.

The surrounding area combines the city's ancient layout with a serene atmosphere, especially at nightfall, as can be perceived in the image of the illuminated building. The front courtyard provides a spacious and open area, where lighting enhances the white facade and the presence of occasional vegetation, such as the palm tree highlighted by lights, creating a discreet and contemplative setting.

Origin and Function

The Center of Visual Arts emerges from the continuity of the Photography Encounters and has established itself as an independent project dedicated to contemporary imagery. Since its inauguration in 2003, it has adapted the former college to host exhibitions and initiatives focused on photography and visual arts. The space combines the preservation of a historical matrix with a current vocation for artistic research and dissemination.

The institution prioritizes contemporary approaches to imagery, articulating collections, temporary exhibitions, and projects that encourage reflection and interpretation. The nature of the space invites a slow presence: it is not just for looking, but for thinking about what is seen.

Architecture and Environment

The building retains the sober and balanced presence typical of buildings with ancient roots, with a light-toned facade marked by symmetrical windows and entrance doors elevated by stairs. The interior has been requalified to support different exhibition formats, including areas designed for photography, video, and mediation. The ensemble reflects a productive tension between the architectural past and the demand for a flexible space for presenting contemporary works.
