Its origin dates back to the early 17th century, specifically to the year 1623, as indicated by an inscription on its base. It was the work of master Manuel João, a sculptor and builder from Coimbra of that era, reflecting the tradition of roadside crosses that marked important points in the territory. Although the piece we observe today is a later representation, it preserves the memory and symbolism of the original cross that gave its name to this emblematic location.

Design and Style

The Celas Cross exhibits a Late Renaissance architectural style, characterized by its sobriety and elegance. The cross itself is tall and devoid of complex adornments, distinguished by its trefoil-shaped extremities, a common detail in crosses of that period. It rests on a quadrangular base, which in turn rises from three steps. This structure lends it a dignified and imposing presence in the urban space, inviting passersby to a brief pause to appreciate the simplicity of its lines and its historical significance.
