The Quiaios Waterfall is located on the northern slope of the Serra da Boa Viagem, next to the village of Quiaios, in the municipality of Figueira da Foz. The site is integrated into a valley where the riverbed draws soft curves over limestone rock.
Enveloped by a dense grove of cork oaks and strawberry trees, the waterfall is found in a tranquil spot where the sound of water contrasts with the silence of the mountains.
In winter and spring, the flow draws a veil over the travertine layers, revealing hues ranging from white to ochre. The falls, about four meters high, are notable for the delicacy of their flow in contrast to the irregular bed.
The presence of bryophytes and lichens on the rocks creates a green carpet that enhances the humid environment and lends an almost timeless atmosphere to the site.
Access is via a dirt and stone trail, about five hundred meters long from the parking area. The path includes slight inclines and exposed roots.
Along the route, small clearings emerge, offering different perspectives of the valley and allowing for moments of pause to contemplate the landscape.
During the summer, the waterfall may dry up completely, revealing the natural stone steps formed by limestone deposits over time.
The best conditions for observing the flow are after the autumn rains and in winter, when the water level rises sufficiently to form crystal-clear pools at the base of the fall.
The travertine bed results from the accumulation of calcium carbonate, creating formations sculpted by water over centuries. These deposits are evidence of the alkaline composition of the mountain waters.
The exposed strata allow for the appreciation of different phases of mineral deposition, making the site of interest for those exploring the geology and natural evolution of the terrain.
