The Bissaya, Barreto House Museum is located in the Alta de Coimbra area, a historic part of the city. It is situated at Rua da Infantaria 23, in an elevated area that forms part of the historical center.
This house was the private residence of Fernando Bissaya Barreto for about fifty years. A physician, surgeon, and philanthropist, he was a prominent figure in social medicine and assistance in Portugal. The space allows visitors to get closer to his personal environment and the values that guided his life, such as the pursuit of beauty, order, and perfection.
It is a place to experience the atmosphere of his time.
After serving as his home, the building opened to the public as a House Museum in 1986, preserving the legacy of its former resident.
The house itself features remarkable architecture, designed by architect Fiel Viterbo and built between 1923 and 1925. Its style is considered eclectic, incorporating elements that evoke the Baroque period of D. João V. A distinctive octagonal turret crowns the building, with elegant windows adding a unique touch.
The entire complex, from its structure to its finishes, reflects the meticulous work of local artisans and artists, visible in the constructive and decorative details that enrich the house's architecture.
In addition to its architecture, the House Museum offers access to a carefully designed and ornamental garden, a space that complements the residence's atmosphere. Inside, visitors will find period furniture and various art collections, including paintings and sculptures.
This ensemble of elements, the house, the garden, and the collections, was chosen and arranged to reflect the importance that beauty and aesthetics held for Bissaya Barreto, creating a harmonious environment that invites contemplation and discovery.
