, Initially, the castle served to defend the anchorage at the mouth of the Mondego River.

, Mentioned in a donation by D. Afonso Henriques in 1143.

, It had a square plan and dominated the medieval settlement.

, It lost importance with the construction of the Fortress of Buarcos in the 14th century and eventually disappeared.

Change of Ownership

, Belonged to the Monastery of Santa Cruz de Coimbra.

, Sold to private individuals in the 19th century after the extinction of religious orders in 1834.

, The current family acquired the ruins through a public auction.

Demolition and Preservation

, In 1854, the Ministry of Public Works ordered the demolition, but the corner was preserved.

, This corner served as a maritime landmark and for topographic and geodetic measurements.

Recent Development

, In 2021, a loan agreement was signed with the Municipality of Figueira da Foz.

, The agreement allows the management of the monument by the municipality for 25 years.
