The pillory stands in the square opposite the Bobadela parish church, inaugurating the small square with irregular limestone and granite paving. The surrounding area, with its simple layout, offers a peaceful perspective on the low houses and narrow streets of this village in the municipality of Oliveira do Hospital.
Located in the heart of Bobadela, the monument stands out next to a stone cross and a few steps from the ancient Roman arch. The surroundings, without major modern interferences, preserve the genuine atmosphere of a rural nucleus with strong historical roots.
Erected after the granting of the Manueline charter on October 15, 1513, the pillory testifies to Bobadela's former autonomy as a municipality until 1836. It recalls the judicial status of the village in the Modern Era, when each municipal seat proudly displayed a pillory as a symbol of power and justice.
Classified as a Property of Public Interest by Decree No. 23 122 of October 11, 1933, it remains a landmark of local identity. It is also a visible vestige of the presence of the Crown and the charter law, elements that shaped the administrative evolution of the region for centuries.
Built in granite, it rests on a plinth of four quadrangular steps almost level with the ground, upon which the cubic base rises. The column begins with a square section and unfolds into four spiral-shafted colonnettes, lending dynamism to the ensemble.
At the top, a square-section capital supports a circular piece decorated with geometric and phytomorphic motifs. From the ring forming the capital emerges the conical finial, also twisted, culminating in a truncated top that gives it a simple and harmonious character.
